Thoughts of earthquake disaster movies with whiplashing bridges crossed my mind, but Alice seemed to be having a great time, so I knew it was just me. I wished I could enjoy the view of a city I’d never been to before, but I had to keep my eyes on the sidewalk so I wouldn’t fall. Alice then noticed that my entire load was listing to the left. Thinking that my tent and sleeping bag had merely shifted, I didn’t look closer at the time, but instead pushed on to the end of the bridge. We stopped long enough to reposition the load by pushing all of it until it was back over the middle of my rear wheel.
For the first time we could ride side by side, which was a welcome change and a less lonely way to pass the hours. Our rearview mirrors still saw some use, but cars and trucks coming in either direction were rare on a Sunday morning. We rolled over series after series of pleasantly undulating hills, sun-ripened crops of grain rippling along both sides of the road. The ready-to-harvest fields against the bluest of skies made us want to get off our bikes, don berets, and take up oil paints and brushes.
We were an unusual sight, with large bandannas tucked under the elastic of the legs of our shorts and tied around our ankles to protect us from the fiery sun. Along with liberal applications of sunscreen, we were able to prevent burning, but we looked like two circus clowns with the mismatched red, blue, yellow, and purple squares of cloth flapping as we pedaled. On top we wore white longsleeved shirts, which proved essential. We took to pouring precious water from our water bottles onto the front and back of our shirts, enjoying a few minutes of cooling each time.
