Retold and illustrated by Lorinda Bryan Cauley. Harcourt, 1979. A classic telling of a tale that is commonly thought to be a thinly disguised autobiography of Hans Christian Andersen. Here the cygnet is hatched with other ducklings and is thought to be a duckling.

The Cauleys have lived in various cities in New Jersey, upstate New York, and in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Escondido, California. Both she and her husband have designed and created "beachy" clothes to sell in their clothing stores in New Jersey.
This timeless fairy tale is given a new perspective through Cauley's large and expressive illustrations. Although the tale is cited as traditional fare for the young reader, an early version of the story was somewhat different from subsequent retellings. In 1837 a Robert Southey retold a story of a small, wee bear, a middle-sized bear, and a great, huge bear. " Joseph Cundall deemed the old woman an unsatisfactory element in the tale, so when he retold the tale in his Treasury of Pleasure Books for Young Children (1850), the intruder was a little girl named Silver-Hair.
